About

Volunteering opportunities in China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Mongolia.

Josephine2Who are we?

Just Volunteers! (JV) was established in 2009 to help a small number of independent charities in China (including Hong Kong), Malaysia and Mongolia to find full-time, short term volunteers to teach English and other subjects, to act as mentors or to help run summer camps.  This is entirely a non-profit organization  run by Josephine Chesterton who has worked for over 35 years in China (including Hong Kong) in banking and academia, and in recent years in the NGO sector.

What are the projects?

The project organizations are mainly orphanages or related schools, but there are also vocational projects for the disadvantaged and disabled and a refugee school.

We are independent of most of the projects we work with and our role in most cases is to identify suitable volunteers for the projects. We charge them no fees, this is a non-profit organization.

However, SPICE in Hong Kong and BBBB in Malaysia are joint projects run in cooperation with other NGOs. (See ‘The Projects’ page for a full list and follow the Tabs for details on individual projects.)

This is not a ‘Gap Year Company’ with all the hand holding (and cost!) that travel with such an organization implies.

Who are our volunteers?

In the ten years since we began we have had volunteers from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin America, New Zealand and North America. (However, we are limited by the local visa conditions, in taking certain passport holders.)

Most volunteers are undergraduates and recent graduates, but we have had a number of volunteers who were taking a career break and many talented people who were not graduates.

While the majority of our volunteers are international, every year we place volunteers in their own country!
